Bipolar Disorder. Treatment

Lithium carbonate remains the mainstay of treatment in bipolar disorder, although sodium valproate is equally effective in acute mania. Carbamazepine is also efficacious. The response rate to lithium carbonate is 70 to 80 percent in acute mania, with beneficial effects appearing in 1 to 2 weeks. A prophylactic effect in prevention of recurrent mania, and, […]

Cool Loneliness

I first discovered this article in May of 2003. I did a search on my posts for the word “present”, and this is the second post that came up. The first is this one on a trip to Disneyland. This seems to be around the time when I actually began to wake up from my […]

Britney Spears

I’ve written a previous post about celebrity lives and why they predispose people towards problems with their mental health. It seems likely that his death was caused by an overdose of sleeping pills, either mistakenly or intentionally. As a psychiatrist […]

Post-Christmas Tally

Sleep has been very erratic once again, and its effect on my productivity has been disastrous. In the past several days, I have spent a grand total of about 30 hours awake, most of which was squandered playing play-money poker online. In short, I feel like a lazy sloth and I’m hating the feeling.
In my […]

Just a little off the top, please

Hello everyone!
I’d like to take a moment to ask you, “Just how much BS are you currently working with in your day?” It’s my opinion that most bipolar folks have any number of piles stacking up at any one time thanks to their out of control symptoms list. I’m talking about stress. There’s plenty […]

My First Night Alone

As a general warning, those of you who are sick of the blogosphere’s typical unadulterated flow of personal outcryings will probably want to stop reading my blog for the next…well for a while, anyway. With that out of the way, we now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
Sleep Woes
The last thing I wanted to do […]
